My sister works for happiness. She waits. Her masters diploma, the move back home, partnership at the firm, a sense of belonging. And in the meantime, I’ve forgotten what her smile looks like. She never has it for long enough.
I’m not patient like her. I want to be happy today and if I’m lucky that tomorrow comes, I want to be happy too. But if tonight is my last, I want to have been happy today. So I might talk to a stranger because old people have great war stories. Maybe I’ll smoke a cigarette or take one too many shots. Or today I could just stay in bed and not do my laundry. I’ll do whatever it is that will make me happy. And waiting doesn’t.
